Business Continuity
Planning is now part of US federal law!
It was included in part
of the "IMPLEMENTING RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE 9/11 COMMISSION ACT OF 2007".
Here is a link to the
relevant part of the act:
Title IX-Private Sector Preparedness
Buried at the end of the
act is something called NFPA 1600.
NFPA stands for National
Fire Protection Association. NFPA 1600 contains the teeth in Title
IX of the 9/11 act.
"NFPA 1600 Standard on
Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs 2007 Edition" is
a comprehensive set of standards that companies would use to certify themselves
for the 9/11 act.
Here is a link to NFPA
1600:
NFPA 1600 - 2007 Edition
Even though Title IX is
a voluntary program, the standards contained in the 9/11 act and NFPA 1600 could
easily be used in a lawsuit related to an incident.
